Scale Insects and their meticulous attend-ants

Posted by
itchydogimages (Pu'er, China) on 28 May 2012 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio.

Scale insects (which are related to stink bugs) are known to gardeners and agricultural farmers as a pest because they feed on the plants they live on and usually by way of sheer weight of numbers, destroy vegetation. A mutualistic relationship exists between some ants and scale insects so they are always seen together. The scale insects provide the ants with a liquid carbohydrate food which they excrete and the ants protect the scale insects.
