Golden Leaf Beetle Larvae

Posted by itchydogimages (Pu'er, China) on 9 July 2014 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio.

(Podontia lutea, Chrysomelidae)

Podontia genus larvae retain their faeces and coat their entire bodies with waste. This coating acts as a deterrent to attacking enemies such as ants. The faecal coat may also serve to moderate body temperature or to reduce water loss but the functions have not been tested.
